Sorry for not writing for such a long time as am busily preparing for our new fashion launch cum atelier opening this sat 1 Oct. But here we have given our shophouse facade a new coat of paint so the original dull exterior is now in blush with pink windows. And our signage will be going up very soon this week. You cant miss us from the bus stop opposite or if you are driving down Tanjong Pagar Road. Btw the bus stop is just infront of us and our exterior is so saccharine and feminine now, it makes you go weak in the knees.

And I got my artist friend to paint plum blossoms with gold paint and colourful birds onto our doorway and staircase. She amazes me with her patience painting meticulously for 2 weeks. coat after coat of fine brush of paint. Like all things Fuchsia Lane - creating luxurious items handmade with time and pride.

Hair Workshop at Atelier on 24 July

On a lazy Sunday afternoon 24 July, we invited Taiwanese hair director Ryan Hsieh from Creme Hairdressing to give a hair workshop on how to take care of your hair, the proper way to wash your hair and style your hair in minutes for different occasions. The workshop was really fun and cosy and the participants enjoyed themselves. I had shopped for the best breakfast tea from one of France's oldest tea house and those who came were served delicious cakes from Canele, Flor Patiserrie and Laurent Bernand. They also went home happy with their purchases!

The making of handwrapped lace buttons

Handwrapped lace buttons is one of the design highlights in my new collection L'Amore. They can be found in my silk shirts, linen jackets and skirts. I was so obsessed with these little beauties that I was making these buttons even while watching television. Till i sleep with my fingers cramped. And my hand continue to ache when I wake up. Sometimes I have customers who ask me why are my things priced as such. And I told them we emphasize on fine workmanship. These 2 words will be better explained below.
The lace is measured to the right length before making the buttons.
Before making the buttons, the Lace and lining has to be cut with a circle template. If you do 10 buttons, you need to cut 10 lace pieces and the lining into a circle shape according to the template. That is only for 1 top. But the tops come in different sizes. At the end of the day, we begin to suffer hand cramps from cutting such small circles.
Black and white lace cut out into circles. We need to further discern the pattern. So those who are similar are grouped into 1 top/skirt to achiever a coherent look. These black and white lace is for the sultry siren white silk shirt.
Lace buttons are finally completed. These buttons are for the houndstooth check pencil skirt with furry details.
If we had used normal buttons, we would have saved an incredible amount of time. But fine touches like these differentiate a mass produced item from a luxurious designer piece that is handmade with time and pride. Some customers cannot tell the difference but those with a discerning eye can. And this better explains why our items are priced as such.

True mark of fine workmanship

Each piece of french lace is cut and measured according to the shoulder width of the silk shirt and meticulously hand sewn onto the shoulder. This gives a very soft feel to the silk shirt as compared to using sewing machine to sew the lace onto the shirt. And when you flip over the shirt, you will not see ugly stitch marks. Silk fabric itself is soft and dainty and more difficult to handle than other fabrics like cotton when sewing. A seamstress has to exercise patience and care when handling silk as it tears and slips easily.

This is the true mark of fine workmaship. However, as a result, it takes thrice as long to complete each piece. And perhaps it can answer humbly the question why this silk shirt is sold at $268.

Introducing my designs. This greeen cheongsam top and houndstooth check pants sold out and appeared on Urban during January! We had black, red and white as well and everything was sold out during the CNY.

I love how graceful Sabrina looks in my Ming embroidered cheongsam in nude pink. This piece is inspired by the floral motifs found on the Ming blue and white porcelain. The white piece is a hot sell out and comes in black too.

The handpainted blossoms and peonies caught my attention immediately. Have you seen anything like that?? Goes so well with my own collection of clothes. And I have deep respect for designers who value artisanal skills as much as I do. It took 2 weeks to paint on the fine calf leather. And dont worry the painting wont disappear under the rain. This is something I designed for a gentleman who wanted to give this to her partner as a gift. He only told me he like something flowy, pink and long sleeve top with slits. So that is what I came up with. A loose silk georgette top with slits at the side, cinched at the waist with an obi and a silk organza skirt, all handsewn one by one with flower applique and pink Swarovski pearls. They can be worn together or separately. She fell in love with it immediately!

Few months back, I received an overseas phonecall from their journalist to be featured on their business traveller guide that will come with the paper on 11 Dec. And I was over the moon. Financial Times is an important and trusted business publication and to be featured is indeed an honour. It was like a dream come true and perhaps our first step to being international! This is the 3rd overseas coverage after being featured twice on the fashion cover of The Star Malaysia, one of the most widely read papers in Malaysia.

Quest for the perfect atelier space

Be prepared for the long story. Our search for a new place began early this year. It was a eventful but also difficult year for us. We spent alot of resources on our ETERNITY fashion and art showcase at ION Orchard which grew bigger than expected and even had the Minister and Parliamentary Secretary of MICA turned up as Guests of Honour. Then there was the Opening of our new brand corner at Parco. And our invitation to Bangkok by the Royal Thai Embassy to represent Singapore in an opening fashion show at one of their important trade events.

After this, we were approached by a powerful shopping centre operator to open a 1200sqf flagship store at one of their Orchard Road's glitzy properties. Talks went on for a trying 4-5 months with many roller coaster developments. The staff got so excited about the idea of Fuchsia Lane at Orchard Rd. But we are just a growing designer and lacked the financial resources of a chain store to invest the kind of money. But they had faith in us and we were given "false" hopes that things will work out. But at the very last minute before we signed on the dotted line, I was given a shock to deliver a HUGE deposit.A deposit that will paralyse our operations. So I even went to approach their CEO and appealed for my situation. They asked us to moved to another location if we couldnt pay the deposit. Sadly it didnt work out and we wasted 5 months.

Then I considered extending our lease next year at Red Dot but perhaps was fate. Someone beat us to it. Another tenant quickly signed their lives away to our unit. So we were on another search. At that point, I was quite depressed. And I walked around the neighbourhood. Well we chanced upon a shophouse unit at Duxton Road.

The street was quiet and we were told the road used to be sleazy and people shun it. But the rent was relatively ok given its space and I thought serenity was a plus point. Talks went on for 2 weeks and things seem to be moving fast. And I thought maybe finally I will have my place afterall. I brought my staff to see the place and they were quite happy with it. But 2 days after the letter of intent was sent to us by the landlord, the landlord changed his mind and decided not to rent to us! I couldn't believe it happened to me then. He said he wanted to renovate it and could rent it out at a higher price. Well good luck to him! I feel many business folks now do not have much integrity. Sadly..

By this time, I had felt very tired and beaten. I thought is this a trial? The searching of places and the negotiations and the roller coaster effect on emotions were a toil to one physically and mentally. Well, on the very next day, I called up agents one by one I could find on internet and asked for a space in the neighbourhood. But either they were not ideal (as my customers wouldnt like to go) or they were too expensive. So I started walking from Bukit Pasoh to Keong Saik to Craig to Duxton to Tanjong Pagar to Southbridge Road to North Canal to Boat Quay IN ONE DAY, looking at shophouses one by one. Those that had "rental banners" hanging outside. I quickly called the agent to ask for pricing. I fell sick from heat stroke the same night and was down for 2 days.

Then I found my current unit at Tanjong Pagar Road. Well but nothing goes smooth. This time round I decided not to tell anyone till I sign on the dotted line. It is like carrying a baby to term. Better not tell at premature stages. Well talks went on for another 3 weeks with the "ping ponging" of contracts here and there. And at the beginning the contract was so "scary" that my lawyer once commented it look like a loan shark agreement. And I had to put my negotiation skills to test.

Finally after 3 weeks, we inked the deal. And the rest is history. The rent is as much times more at Red Dot as the space is. Some of my friends asked if I could cope. Well in business sometimes you have to take that leap of faith and I had customers who reassured me they will follow me whereever I go. Comforting! And there was G. I could only work hard, design more clothes (the best part I like), serve my customers with all my heart and leave the rest to the higher powers above.

President Designer's Award- 19 November

Hmm.. Here I am at the Istana the second time in the same week. Guess not many people will have the chance to be invited twice a week to the Istana. :p This time round it is for the President's Designer Award. And I got invited into the grand mansion which is the place where national dignitaries are invited as guests. The chandeliers are jaw dropping awesome. Grand! Really an event where the design heavyweights are. I was given a seat beside the seat for Wykidd Song.

I exchanged greetings with Tina Tan Leo - the brains behind The Link Group and the famous All Dressed Up (she is very affable with no airs), shook hands with the President again (who is like a kind grandfather) and said hello To Minister Lui Tuck Yew who was my Guest of Honour earlier this year at my Eternity Opening Night @ Ion Orchard. Surprisingly he remembers me! :)) And I told him we moved to a new shophouse and he said he does wear the embroidered bamboo shirt I gave him as a token of appreciation. And took pictures with our very own couture maestro Tan Yoong. He is one of the judges and he remarked I have successfully differentiated myself from Shanghai Tang and with a class of my own.(I floated to cloud 9 but still have to work harder). I also said hello to Lee Chor Lin, who is the brains behind the Singapore National Museum. I am always inspired by powerful ladies who are behind the success of a brand.

And why I was at this event. Oh well.. I am nominated for the President's Designer Award but as I expected it, I didnt win the award. I think the award should be reserved for the experienced. I heard Wykidd Song and Frederick Lee were nominated as well. The winner was a photographer who was colour blind but managed to make his name as a fashion photographer in the competitive New York. Inspiring indeed. And another goes to an architect Kerry Hill who has spent all his life building remarkable structures. My next biggest hope is to showcase overseas or hold an exhibition. Well, I did hold a fashion show at the invitation of the Royal Thai Embassy this March. But I am ambitious. I hope for one at New York, Paris, Tokyo or Milan. Will work towards it.

We were awarded at the Istana by President Nathan on 15 November (which is the day we moved!)for contributing to charity during our ETERNITY fashion showcase held at ION Orchard during 27 Jan 2010. But I thought they should award my presenting Sponsor On Cheong Jewellery instead. Because our massive showcase wouldnt be possible without their support.

It is the first time we are at the Istana and it was a grand place full of greenery and stature which made us feel like we were in a very luxurious resort. And of course this is absolutely the first time we are talking to the President up close and personal! Geesh..It is quite unnerving at first but he is a kind and grandfatherly figure with absolutely no airs and look very patient as you talk to him. Will be framing this picture up in my atelier :)

Beansprouts!

Last Sat, G had a family gathering which I couldnt attend as I was stationed at Parco. After his gathering he came to my house which was about 11pm. I was really hungry and he saw a plate of fried koay teow which my mum had bought earlier and had already turned cold..and asked me if I wanted to eat it and he would heat it up for me.

Being a fussy eater, I said I didnt want it as there are many beansprouts. And I really dislike beansprouts in my dish. After that I went to the washroom. And when I came back, I saw G picking out the beansprouts from the koay teow one by one with his chopsticks. And that really melted my heart. No fancy flowers, no posh restaurants, no honeyed words. Just the simple honest act of him picking out the beansprouts one by one showed his patience and meticulous towards his fussy gf. And after that, he fried an omelette to wrap the koay teow and squeezed it with lime. I thought what a creative way of re-cooking leftovers! Was yummy! :)

Mooncake Festival

Today is Mooncake Festival. I actually had an evening meeting which I am relunctant to go. I belong to the school of old romance. As I think it is the day which I should reserve to spend time with my loved ones. And the happiest thing today is when I reached home to find my newphew waiting for me till 10 to bring him out for a stroll with the lanterns. Little Bubu is 2 years old and seeing his face lit up under the moon when he was trying to hold 2 lanterns makes me contented.

I think my taste and fashion sense have changed dramatically over the years. While I still go weak in the knees for "kawaii" and pink, I think twice about wearing them or using them. Perhaps it has got to do with knowing my mentor Thomas and my change in lifestyle as well as just celebrating my 30th birthday. Girly has become "feminine" for me, and while I strive to look "sweet" in my 20s, I like to look "stylish and sophisticated" now. And here are my thoughts which I have collected on looking Stylish.

1. Invest in good shoes
Thomas Wee once told me the first thing he looks at when a customer steps in is her shoes. There are many times in the past I have in a moment of folly bought a pair of fashion shoes thinking they are cheap but in the end only wear them once as they hurt so badly (most cheap shoes are made of pigskin that suffocate your feet or the general shape is not ergonomic).

Recently I invested on 3 pairs of shoes on my birthday from the Tangs Designer Department but I wear them so often as they matched with all my pieces that the price per use dwindles. 1 navy blue ballet flats and 3 classic shoes in black, silver and shocking pink. And everytime I wear them I receive compliments. :)

2. Invest in good underwear
Good luxurious underwear which provide the right support can make a lady feel happy and desirable the whole day. Throw away discoloured or out of shape underwear. I recommend Wacoal or Marks and Spencer for basics. Wacoal's tummy tuckers make your tummy disappear under a fitting dress with no VPL. Many times I realise females wear the wrong bra and this leads to having a "squashed" bust or "fats" spilling from the sides. Every lady is born with assets so take care of them well.

3. Get a bag that suits you and not because it is branded
Many times I saw a lady walk in with a branded bag (that I know cost a bomb if it's genuine) only to display a really stingy and ill bred personality. You will rather someone tell you you have a stylish bag rather than you have an expensive bag.
My boyfriend bought me an Armani bag recently for my birthday. I saw it on the shelf and fell in love with it immediately. It is not very expensive but I really love it because of its navy blue patent finish and the shape of the bag. And it is limited which means I wont sit in a cafe and see the lady next to me using it.
When you want to buy a bag, ask yourself where you can use it, and if it's suitable for your image, the workmanship and are you buying it because of the logo or you really like the design

4. Your watch reflects your personality
A watch speaks volume about your personality. 10 years ago, I want a casio baby G. 5 years ago, I like CK. Now I wear a Balmain with steel bracelet. I like the arabesque motifs on the clock face. And next I will like a Longines or Ebel. This applies to men too so which explains why I like to buy watches for G.

5. Be adventurous with colour
While black is a safe colour, life will be so boring if there is only black and white. Wearing a dash of purple, hot pink or orange(not all at once pls!) brightens you up and adds a surprise element. For example you can pair an all black ensemble with bright pink shoes. Or wear a peach chiffon top with white pants. Wear a red dress with gold shoes. Life is too short to be safe.

6. Sexy and slutty is a thin line of difference
Sexy is revealing a hint of flesh and leaving much to the imagination. Slutty is revealing all at one go. If you have a revealing top, pair it with a modest bottom. And if you like to reveal your legs, pair it with a turtle neck or crisp shirt. Wear a corset with jacket and pants, pair a see through chiffon top with knee length pencil skirt or pants. It is not fun if you can see everything.

7. Love and pamper your body
Most importantly, love your body. Accept the strengths and weaknesses. Give yourself scrubs and regular massages. Drink enough water, eat vitamins and exercise adequately. Take an effort to "manage your body." Surround yourself with positive and energised people.
I grew up with my mum who thinks saving and giving all to your family is noble and up till now she doesnt spend a single cent on cosmetics and skincare not to mention spa. This is probably right then. But now women lead highly stressful lives and if you dont spend on taking good care of yourself, how can you have the confidence and energy to love others around you?
Only when you are happy, healthy and confident, do you exude radiance that makes others envious.

Garden of Eden Gown worn to Prestige Ball

My customer Alethea who wore our gown to the high profile Prestige Ball at Ritz Carlton hotel. She look so ethereal in it.

The gown has a super low neckline and is draped at the side with a waist high slit and sewn with cascading flowers. V romantic and sexy. And Alethea has super long legs to show off!

Making of Garden of Eden Gown (part 1)

I designed a gown for my customer Alethea who is attending the Prestige Ball-one of the most important events for the rich and famous. She is also my regular customer who modelled my Ming collection :) Before she sends me her pretty photos, I will revealed the making of the gown in episodes. Cant wait!

We spent 4 days sewing on the individual flowers onto the bodice. One by One. I pinned the flowers on myself which took almost a day! I wanted to create the feeling of a Garden of Eden Goddess.

Look at how close the flowers are on the bodice. And how they seem to be real with beads sewn onto them.

Birthday Meal

While most people spend birthdays in restaurants, G will usually be the chef on special occasions cos he enjoys cooking for me :)
On my special day, he came right after I woke up with ingredients bought from the supermarket ready to cook a sumptuous lunch. What luxury! It is like room service with breakfast served when you open your eyes. And I remember the first meal he ever cooked for me was on the beach with many envious pedestrians :)))
