The Making of my gown for the ROM Solemnisation

Sorry for the long wait as I have been busy preparing for my ROM Solemnisation Ceremony, held at the High Society Cafe, MBS in November. Here's a peek at the making of my ROM gown, shoes and hair piece which took about a month with the endless sewing!

The beginning of my beautiful ROM gown done to my exact measurements. Watch how it gets transformed after sewing stitch by stitch over 20 days with our exquisite French lace applique and Swarovskis.

The dress is laid on the lace fabric to find the most ideal pattern layout

Sewing on lace applique requires a keen eye for aesthetics and details besides skilled hands to sew on the lace stitch by stitch. The designer has to visualise how different parts of the lace has to be arranged on the gown to give the most stunning effect.

The bottom of the lace is pin onto the bustier portion of the gown.

Instead of cutting the lace out directly which will result in fraying. The tailor unpicks the thread that holds the flowers, meticulously and patiently.

After unpicking, the loose ends are then folded in part by part and Hand sewn carefully to ensure the flowers look fluffy and natural. Sewing with a sewing machine will be much faster but will spoil the natural beauty of the flowers. Even a small part of the gown is done in such a meticulous way which is the signature of luxury fashion-details do matter even when unseen.

The lace applique is cut out one by one and arranged onto the gowns with pins first. This part requires much thought by the designer because the precise position of the lace applique matters. Sometimes few hours can be spent just thinking if the lace applique need to be shifted more to the left, right, up or down which affects the entire visual impact of the gown.

At the back of the gown is a specially ordered diamond zip from Japan.

The gown has a translucent lace portion at the bottom which is a special design feature. As I am very petite, I am not suited for a long gown. But the translucent lace at the bottom means it will not weigh me down and adds some sexiness without being tarty.

Every step of making a gown requires much patience, difficulty and very skilled hands. The seamstress has to put her hand inside the gown during the entire sewing process to prevent sewing the lace onto the inner lining.

The lace is sewn using an "invisble stitching" technique. When you turn the gown inside out, you can hardly see any stitches as they are like ultra fine tiny dots which is lesser than 0.5mm! These skilled seamstresses have at least being sewing for 30 years and are a dying crowd.

Sewing a diamante trimming onto the edge of the gown. The sewing went on for days and days to weeks.

Behind this tool is a steady skilled hands repeating this process tirelessly of putting on Swarovskis on the flowers one by one until the whole gown is full of hundreds of Swarovskis. The tool melts the glue behind the crystal to ensure adhesion of the crystal to the gown. To do this, the timing and angle of holding the tool requires much precision.

After this, we require sewing on bigger crystals to ensure there is a "layered" effect of different size crystals on the gown.

In luxury fashion, everything is done as detailed and meticulous as possible. Even inside the seams, where no one thinks they bother to see.

The shoes are also done to match the gown. Parts of the lace applique is cut from the same lace and sewn on the shoes to create a complete look. This is signature to Fuchsia Lane- sewing on lace applique even on shoes which is much much more stiffer and harder than fabric!

Precious pair of shoes with complementary elements from the gown.

This is the first time we are doing everything from the gown, matching shoes to the head piece. Was challenging at first as we have never really designed head piece. Took us 3 days to do, redo and unpick before I am happy with it.

Sometimes people can never imagine how much work goes into creating something so simple yet elegant and stunning. The thought process, the arrangement, the trials, re-doing and unpicking until you get it right, the wasted samples and the final tedious sewing. But what is simple and elegant is truly the result of an unseen team of efforts and thoughts

A peek of the final gown. Shy...

By the way, many of the guests love the gown-and the super expensive embroidered fabric (most expensive fabric I have bought actually) was courtesy of hubby and imported from Europe!

Broth

Recently I unearthed a few gems at Duxton Hill while going location hunting for our new fashion shoot. And the restaurant Broth is one of them. You feel you have stepped into another era and you can almost feel English gentlemen from Yorkshire will gather here for a leisure drink or 2.

The ceiling is extremely high with chandeliers and antique fans, plus its floor to ceiling windows, give the place a grand luxurious setting that is rare for restaurants here. The wine corner at the back which resembles a treasured library trove plus the dark wooden chairs give it a chic English vibe. There is a bar counter at the side with an old ice-kacang machine. An interesting mix of East and West I would say. This place really seems an intimate setting for a couple dinner or get together for close friends.

I was told by friendly Chunky, the restaurant manager there, that their specialty is Lamb Loin as well as Baby spinach and Portobello Mushroom Salad. For those with sweet tooth, he recommended the sticky date pudding as well as the supernova pavlova! Sounds yummy. I was quite apprehensive when I asked if we could borrow the place for a photo shoot. But Chunky said yes and he told their Australian boss believes in helping neighbours :) And they have been around for 11 years at Duxton Hill! Gosh, so they indeed have what it takes to establish themselves in the fickle and competitive F&B scene, far from the madding crowd.

You can always reserve a place with them (www.broth.com.sg) but they are closed on Sundays.

Look out for our new collection!

"How to ERASE years off your face" workshop and Late Night Friday Shopping is changed to 29 March Thurs 730-9pm due to popular demand

Aging- something that I never thought of when I was in my 20s. Now that I stepped into the 3rd decade of my life, I start to see the ugly truths. The occasional fine lines, the darker circles, the lost of suppleness- they suddenly seem to become disturbing! And with our humid weather plus my endless nights of working dont seem to make it any better. I regret not learning earlier as prevention should start as early as 20s.

Slowly I put more awareness into my skin care regime which is reduced to essentials only as I value time to be spent on my business instead. I read books on skin care by celebrities and conscientiously slap on moisturiser, regular scrubs, masks, facial essence. I met a friend who was my make up consultant 2 years back when I did my "ETERNITY by Fuchsia Lane" show at ION Art Gallery. She is a head trainer in Sephora and soon we became from business acquaintances to friends. Time has not leave any traces on her face. She looked more than 10 years younger than her real age, despite not going for any expensive facials or invasive surgery.

At the back of her head is knowledge of over 15,000 products in Sephora and her job is to try and test every item so she can recommend the right product and brand to different individuals. And she always dishes out simple but amazing advice to maintain the radiance and youth in your looks. She looks immaculate every time I see her even when I meet her downstairs her house!

I think every lady out there needs to know how to pamper and love herself. Aging is a natural process but we should learn how to anticipate and handle it so we age gracefully while appearing appropriate. I advise against being too obsessed as well. And how to apply your skincare right is as important as how good it is.

So I have invited this friend Gelainza to conduct this hands on workshop on 23 March Friday 730-9pm where she will share her simple DIY tricks and make up tips and mistakes to avoid to ERASE years off your face. When it is hands on, you will not forget! So every lady will look irresistible no matter what age she is in. :)

It is just $68 to sign up and $58 if you sign up before 17 March. Plus you will enjoy 10% storewide for late night shopping till 11pm on 23March. VIPS enjoy 15% off storewide that night. Email fashion.suite@fuchsialane.com to sign up now. See you!

The Jacket

The jacket is an amazing transformer. Put on a jacket over t-shirt and shorts or capris, and you transform something overly casual to a stylish chic outfit. Put on your shades and you look like a hollywood celebrity shopping for groceries.
Wear a well cut snug jacket for work and people take you seriously immediately.

Cutting a deal or convincing someone is dependent on what you wear to a certain extent. A well tailored jacket brings up your shoulders, emphasizes your waist and perks up your butt. It gives you confidence to articulate yourself.

I meet customers who tell me they dont wear jacket as it is hot in Singapore. But no matter how hot our climate is, surely we have encountered the freezing office, cinema, cafe and restaurant when we need a lightweight but chic protection. In fact, I think to travel between very hot to cold environment makes one ill easily. So having a jacket regulates your temperature.

Anyway, jacket comes in all shapes and fabrics. There are lightweight ones in cotton or linen that allows your skin to breathe. Before starting my label, I actually lament not being able to find a suitable jacket due to my small frame so every jacket out there swallows me. But now I make cropped jackets , with feminine details like lace accents and floral appliques for petite females who want to make a statement yet still feel feminine.

And above is the scallop jacket where every scallop is drawn by a compass and even more painstaking efforts to sew each scallop to ensure they are equally round. Pair this artwork with a "chunky" necklace and look fabulous instantly. Need I say more.
